Suggestions for Arranging Field Trips to Schools
Partnerships culminate in at least one opportunity for a face-to-face meeting. Pending funding, Wildcat Writers will host a Meet and Greet Event on the UA campus toward the end of the semester. However, teachers that have organized additional meetings between their students in the past have found these meetings to be very fruitful.
When the high school students visit UA, campus tours can be conducted by student volunteers from the college class or through the office of Minority Student Recruitment. Tours often end at the college composition classroom or in a larger room that has been reserved in advance. Students either meet with their partners to chat, workshop papers, or to hear a guest lecture. Guest lecturers in the past have included civil rights activist Salomon Baldenegro and students from the UA MeCha group.
High school classes also often host college students. These visits can include time to workshop papers, to tour the schools, to conduct research, to collaborate on projects, or to have panel discussions about college. These visits have been voluntary for college students because of the difficulty of coordinating college students’ schedules to require visits. Teachers typically award extra credit for students who are able to visit the high school.
Remember to check in with your partner teacher about the policy for visitors and logistics of where the meeting will take place. Some high schools require visitors' passes, and the correct school authorities need to be notified. UA does not require special permission, but additional rooms may need to be reserved.
